Question:
Can I have both Mu-law compand mode and A-law companding mode in a single Pika HMP system?

Answer:
Yes.

Hardware media stream (the media stream attached to the line interface) is using the compand mode that the interface it set to. So for example, if the interface is set to be A-law, the media stream attached to it is also talking in A-law.

If there is a need for a connection from an A-law interface to a Mu-law interface, switch connection will NOT do the job.

The trick is done through conferencing. The application needs to add the timeslot from different spans (with different compand mode) into a single conference group. The conference will convert both parties to PCM linear format. So they can talk.
